There are four hub styles in the HABITEST system, a square, a hexagon, an octagon, and a dodecagon. All but the dodecagon are available in two sizes (rat and mice). The dodecagon is available in rat size only. All are built using the same bay tracks (the vertical bars with groves into which the stimulus/response modules slide) as the Modular Test Cage, Shuttle Cage, and Passive Avoidance Cage. Only the height of the bay tracks are vary. The bay tracks used in the Hubs are 75% of the height of the ones used in the Modular Test Cage, Shuttle Cage, and Passive Avoidance Cage. 

A shock floor is available for the square, hexagon, and octagon hubs. A non-shock floor is available for all hubs. The hubs are used for a variety of applications including radial arm maze, Y-Maze, T-Maze, etc. The hexagon, octagon, and dodecagon hubs are also used to provide angular stimulus/response module arrays or when a larger array of components is required for complex operant, memory, choice, and other protocols. 

The Square Hub measures 4.3 inches in diameter and is 9 inches high (animal working space).

The Nest-Retreat Box is constructed on a module panel and mounts in the cage bay tracks like any stimulus or response module.  It is fabricated with a 4-unit high module panel.  The closed box is a five-inch cube.  It may be mounted in any hub (square, hexagon, octagon, or dodecagon) or in either the rat shuttle cage or modular test cage.  Owing to its size, it cannot be mounted with most other modules in the adjacent bays in either the rat shuttle cage or the modular test cage,  because, unlike the hubs, the bays in these cages are in a single plane.

A composite floor stands one half inch off of the bottom and rests on an adjustable force switch.  The switch may be adjusted to ignore the weight of nest material, pups, etc., and report the presence of an animal.

The back wall / floor assembly is removable simply by opening two catches for access to the animal, cleaning, tending, and monitoring of pups, or replacement of nest material.
