Acquisition and extinction of a conditional response to an aversive stimulus, typically an electric shock delivered to two fingers of one hand, are studied in this procedure. The user selects the images to be presented – any of four geometric figures in any of six colors – which will be designated as S+ (the stimulus presentation which does not end in aversive stimulation) and which as S- (which is followed by aversive stimulation), and the duration of the aversive stimulus. The sequence in which the visual stimuli are presented and the number of stimulus exposures in the session are user-specified. The software controls the separate subject monitor and finger shocker while acquiring data for ECG, SCR, and EMG modalities.
