The Incapacitance Meter is ideal for assessing spontaneous pain in laboratory animal models. The animal is placed in the appropriate specie holder, on two separated sensor plates. The spontaneous postural changes are noted by changes in weight placed on those sensors by the animal. In the absence of hind paw injury, the animals apply equal weight on both hind paws, exhibiting postural equilibrium. With unilateral hind paw tissue injury, a change in the weight distribution on the sensor can be detected, a lower weight being applied by the injured paw.
